Offering preorder options for your customers is a great way to boost sales and manage customer expectations. This guide will help you set up preorder products in your Shopify store using our theme.
1. Setting Up Preorder Products
- Log in to your Shopify Admin Panel.
- Go to the Products section on the left-hand menu.
- Open the product you want to set up for preorder.

Add a tag named Preorder. To do this:
• Scroll down to the Tags section on the product page.
• Type 'Preorder' and press Enter. - Save the product by clicking the Save button at the top right corner of the page.
2. Preorder Indicators on Your Store
Once you have tagged a product as Preorder, the following changes will automatically apply to your storefront:

Product Card: The product will display a 'Preorder' badge. This badge takes priority over other badges except for the Sold Out badge.
You can change the wording of the badge by going to the '...' options on your theme listing > 'Edit default theme content' > Search for 'Preorder' and edit the wording and save.
- Product Page: The 'Add to Cart' button will change to 'Preorder' and the 'Buy it now' button, if enabled, will be hidden.
- Cross-sell and Complementary Products: The 'Add to Cart button' will display 'Preorder'.
- Cart Page: The product will show a 'Preorder' badge below the product title. Coming soon.
3. Stock Level Indicator
The stock level indicator will also update to reflect that the product is a preorder. This helps in managing customer expectations about the product’s availability. You can edit the wording in the 'Stock level indicator' block.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I have non-inventory tracked products?
The preorder button works for both inventory-tracked and non-inventory-tracked products until the stock reaches zero, unless you have allowed overselling.
How do customers know they are preordering and not purchasing immediately available products?
The 'Preorder' badges and the change in button text from 'Add to Cart' to 'Preorder' make it clear to customers that they are preordering a product however we've also created a Preorder product template which suggests an alternative layout that includes additional prompts to highlight that this is a preorder product.

Can I use metafields to set up preorder products?
Currently, preorder functionality is triggered by tags as we felt the setup was much easier. We may introduce support for metafields in future updates and are keen to hear if this is something merchants want so please do upvote this on our suggestion board.
What languages are supported for preorder messages?
The preorder messages support multiple languages. You can test the translations by selecting the desired language in the language dropdown menu.
Can I customize the preorder badge or button text?
The default setup uses Preorder as the badge and button text. To edit this go to your Theme listing > '...' menu > 'Edit default theme content' > Search for 'Preorder' and edit the wording and save.
