How to set up and display blogs

Blog posts - Introduction

The Blog posts section of your Shopify admin houses your store's blog. You can use this to communicate regular blog posts, the latest news, or press releases. Utilizing this feature can help grow your audience base, keep your existing audience engaged, and improve the general SEO of your website.
Before we continue with how to set up blogs, it's useful to clarify the terminology surrounding blogs:
  • Blog is a collection of blog posts. Examples of blog titles could be 'News', 'Recipes', 'The Latest Fashion Advice', or simply 'My Blog'.
  • Blog post is a specific article that is assigned to a Blog. This is the page that contains the written content. For example, a piece of news, a recipe, tips and advice, or whatever it is you want your audience to know.

In this guide, we'll explain how to create a blog post and display it on your store.

Creating a blog

The first step is to set up a blog to house your article. Your online store has a default blog called News. You can use this if you wish or create a new blog with a custom name.

Step 1: Under Online Store in your Shopify admin, click Blog posts.

Step 2: If this is the first blog post you're creating, click Create blog post.

Or, if you've already added blog posts, click Add blog post.

Step 3: Enter a Title and the Content for the Blog post. This is what your audience will see on the blog page.

Step 4:
We highly recommend adding an image to accompany your post. This will represent your blog post on your storefront and when your blog is shared on external websites.

Step 5: Scroll down to Organization on the right and click on the Blog drop-down menu. This is where you decide whether you want to Create a new blog or use an existing blog (e.g. News.) If you're creating a new blog, enter the name in the Blog title field.

In the below example, we've created a new blog called Giving back to the community.

The next step is to display your blogs on your storefront.

Displaying your blog on your storefront

There are three main ways you can display blogs on your storefront:

  1. Add your blog to your menu
  2. Use a theme section
  3. Insert your blog page URL into plain text

Let's take a look at each one below.

Creating a menu for your blog

A sure way to help your store's visitors find your blog is to put it in your main menu. You can do this in your Shopify admin under Navigation.

Simply follow the dashboard's options to add a blog to your Main menu:

Step 1: Click Main menu.

Step 2: Click Add menu item.

Step 3: Enter a name for the menu item. For example, Blog.

Step 4: Click Search or past a link and navigate to the blog you wish to display.

Step 5: Change the positioning of the menu item if necessary, then Save your changes.

Using a theme section

Use a dedicated theme section like Blog posts to showcase specific blog entries. The Blog posts section can be added to multiple page templates.

By using this section, you can choose a Blog and select the number of posts you want to display.

Inserting your blog page URL in plain text

This option is the least engaging and not visually impactful. However, it's an effective method for casually publicizing your posts without drawing your audience's attention away from the main content on a page.

If your blog post is relevant to a subject on a page, consider embedding a link to the blog where allowed. You can find and copy your blog post URL by going to the blog post and copying the URL in the address bar.

To embed the hyperlink:

Step 1: Go to your Theme Editor.

Step 2: Locate some text that's relevant to your blog post (or add some new text).

Step 3: Highlight the desired text and click the Insert Link button in the section's options.

Step 4: Paste your link and Save your changes.

Tip: Don't go overboard with inserting links. Displaying one link every couple of paragraphs is usually enough.
