How to add custom product badges

Product badges are text labels that communicate noteworthy information about a product. They can be displayed on certain product images on your product and collection pages.

For example:




By default, there are certain badges which the theme automatically applies to products:

  1. New (appears on the collection page if the default sorting method is By date: Newest to oldest)
  2. Popular (appears on the collection list pages if the collection’s default sorting method is set to By best selling)
  3. Sold out (appears on any product that is out of stock according to Shopify’s own inventory tracking feature)
  4. Low stock (displays Only [number] left if any item in your shop meets your configured low stock indication)
  5. Percent off (displays [Percentage]% off on any item in your shop if you have set a Compare at price in your admin settings)
Note: If multiple badges apply to a product, they will be prioritized in the order above.

In this guide, we'll explain how to add custom product badges to your store.

Part 1: Navigating to your product's settings

Select the product that you wish to add a custom badge to. To do this:

Step 1: Within your Shopify admin, go to Products.

Step 2: Select the product that you wish to add a badge to.


Part 2: Adding a badge tag

You can add a product badge to the product by creating a new tag.

Step 1: Scroll down to the Tags section.

Step 2: In the entry field, type badge__ (with two underscores, not one).

Step 3: Directly after the two underscores, enter the text you wish to display on your product. For example: badge__NEW COLLECTION


Step 4: Press enter to secure the tag.

Step 5: Save your changes and repeat with all relevant products.

Note: Please ensure that you have put two underscores between badge and your chosen text.

Part 3: Checking your product page

If your badge tag has been entered correctly, it should now be present on your products. Visit your product page to check if it's displaying.
